Mallorca Guide
Shopping Palma is an exciting city to visit. Large enough to be classed as cosmopolitan yet small enough to walk through, it is ideal for the visitor. The wide bay is beautiful with its array of yachts, fish restaurants, hotels and night spots. Within walking distance are historic buildings, museums, the Gothic cathedral and chic boutiques selling designer clothes and leather goods.
Stroll down Jaime III and see a number of beautiful shoe shops – continue past the Bar Bosc – local stopping place where people watch the world go by - and enter the narrow streets behind where a host of different boutiques are to be found – more shoes, leather goods, children's wear, and fashion clothes.
If you are looking for designer shoes, in the best leather but also at the best price – head for the town of Inca where the factories (here you will find Camper, for instance) offer footwear at half the price of the Palma stores.
Your stroll around Palma will bring you to shops selling locally blown glassware, carved olive wood crafts and beautiful material in the local “lengua design.
Sample a traditional ensaimada at the bakery in Plaza Weyler 11 and contemplate its modernist frontage. And if you are interested in what the locals eat, head for the central food market in Plaza Olivar where you will be amazed at the mounds of fresh fruit, vegetables and fish. The array is wonderful and well worth a visit.
Driving
The island of Mallorca has around 1,600km (990 miles) of road. The most important routes branch out from Palma in star formation - the busiest are those leading to the airport, Andratx, Santanyi, Pollença, Alcudia and Manacor.
Scenic Drives: Drive up to Deià from Palma. One of the most beautiful on the islands, passing Valldemossa and then having the fantastic view of the mountains on your on one side and the sea on the other side.
The 35km Soller-Lluc road. A most dramatic stretch passing soaring cliffs, the gnarled peaks of Puig Major and Puig Massanella, lakes and arriving at Lluc monastery tucked away in a remote valley. |
