An island of contrasts, offering rugged mountains, cliffs dropping to the sea, and a myriad of coves and beaches.  Landscapes of olive, almond and citrus groves, orchard gardens and tiny rural hamlets which seem to defy the onslaught of time.

Deià borders on the municipal areas of Valldemossa, Bunyola and Soller.  The greatest lover of the Tramutana Mountains, the Archduke Louis Salvador assured everyone that Sa Foradada alone was worth more than he had paid for all the land he had bought.

The nearby village of Valldemossa has a Carthusian monastery where Chopin and George Sand once spent the winter months and where Chopin composed several of his most famous preludes.  It has long been a resting place for royal family members and people of the literary world. Also in Valldemossa is the "Costa Nord".  This is a cultural centre where frequent concerts and lectures are held.  On a daily basis it is open for the showing of a documentary film narrated by Michael Douglas recounting the history of this part of the island.

Son Marroig with its fortified tower, maintains a close relationship with Archduke Louis Salvador and still today some of the rooms of the houses can be visited where there is a museum dedicated to the aristocrat who was the owner of a large part of the fortresses in the Mountain area.

In this municipality, peculiar because of its quiet lifestyle and where peace and tranquility reign throughout most of the year, an annual International Music Festival takes place.  This year it kicks off with the flamenco ‘bailaora’ (Dancer) Fuensanta ‘La Moneta’ accompanied on the guitar by Ian Davies and the singer-songwriter Antonio Campos.  With this homage to Flamenco the XXIV Deià International Festival will be inaugurated on the 6th April in Son Marroig.

The Deià International Festival was founded in 1978 and today it is held in high esteem nationally.  Since then it has been held annually in this municipality with appearances by numerous performers who are important in the music world, Majorcan composers and groups as well as appearances by many artists from around the world.
